Dakshin Dinajpur Handloom Sarees
Handloom weaving is a signature industry of Dakshin Dinajpur, brought here by weavers who migrated from Pabna in East Bengal during the Partition in 1947. Gangarampur block has the highest concentration of weavers among the district's eight CD blocks, and the weaver community remains a major employer across the district. The looms turn out cotton and silk sarees and other handwoven fabric sold locally and through district handicraft fairs and the state expo in Kolkata. A buyer gets a genuine handwoven saree with the natural irregularity and drape that machine fabric cannot match.
Typical price: ₹400-3000
Buying tip: Buy from the weaver clusters around Gangarampur or the district-level handicraft fairs where artisans sell directly. Check the weave density and selvedge by hand to confirm it is handloom rather than powerloom.
