Dhokra Jute Mats (Dhokra)
Dhokra is the traditional back-strap-loom weaving of jute (the 'golden fibre') into mats and household textiles, a living heritage craft of Rajbanshi women across both Dinajpur districts. In Dakshin Dinajpur alone, over 2,600 Dhokra craftspersons work in 94 villages of the Harirampur, Kushmandi and Tapan blocks, weaving mats on home-based looms. The mats are eco-friendly, sturdy and used for flooring, covering and daily household purposes, and the craft is actively promoted through the Rural Craft and Cultural Hubs initiative. A buyer gets a handwoven, sustainable jute mat tied to one of North Bengal's oldest weaving traditions.
Typical price: ₹150-800
Buying tip: Buy directly from weaver clusters or RCCH/Karukala online platforms that deal with Dinajpur Dhokra weavers for fair prices. Check that the mat is evenly woven without patchy spots, and ask for plain or patterned weaves as both are made.
