Hooghly, West Bengal
Begampuri Saree
A traditional handloom cotton saree woven in Begampur and its adjoining areas in Hooghly district, whose traditional designs were Matapar and Booty, with the body and border usually in contrasting colours for a crisp, bright, lightweight drape. The Begampur weaving cluster has been revived with support from the Weavers' Centre of Kolkata, and the Begampur cotton saree received its GI tag in 2026. Buyers get a pure cotton, breathable saree suited to everyday and office wear, straight from a living artisan cluster.
Typical price: ₹1500-5000 (premium weaves up to 50000)
Buying tip: Look for the handloom/GI mark and the contrasting body-and-border design; weavers around Begampur sell at cluster prices, well below online retail.
