Murshidabad Silk (Tussar/Mulberry) Sari
Murshidabad silk is a fine silk fabric with production traceable to the 13th century, whose golden-lustre handloom saris attracted European traders by the 17th century. The high-quality tussar and mulberry silk of the Murshidabad belt is the same silk prized in garad and other luxury weaves, and two famous saris produced from it are the Baluchari and the Gorood. A wholesale handloom market in Berhampore still deals in hand-woven Murshidabad silk alongside tussar, matka and garad pieces. Buyers get a heritage Bengal silk sari with the characteristic soft drape and golden sheen of the Nawabi looms.
Typical price: ₹1500-15000
Buying tip: Shop the handloom wholesale lanes around Berhampore and insist on handloom (not power-loom or printed) fabric; compare weight and drape, and expect better rates on tussar than on pure mulberry silk.
