North 24 Parganas, West Bengal
Sundarban Honey
Raw honey collected from the world's largest mangrove forest, the Sundarbans, whose northern portion lies in North 24 Parganas (Hingalganj, Hasnabad, Sandeshkhali I-II, Minakhan and Haroh blocks). Honey gatherers and forest workers collect it from hollow trees and hives in the mangrove creeks, and it is marketed under the West Bengal Forest Development Corporation's GI-registered programme. It earned an official GI tag in January 2024, making it one of West Bengal's newest GI foodstuffs. It is darker, malty and less sweet than commercial honey, with a taste attributed to the mangrove blossoms of the Sundarbans.
Typical price: ₹500-2500
Buying tip: Buy GI-certified jars (e.g. WBFDCL's Sundarban Raw Honey) and check the certificate number; raw Sundarban honey settles and can crystallise, which is normal.
