Dokra (Lost-Wax) Metalwork of Dariyapur
Lost-wax (dokra/dhokra) cast bronze figures made in Dariyapur village near Guskara, by artisans whose families migrated from Odisha about 120 years ago; over 130 families now practise the craft. The technique builds a clay core, coats it in wax, and encases it in wire before casting deities, tribal figures, animals and jewellery. The craft carries a registered GI (Bengal Dokra) covering the Bikna and Dariyapur clusters, and the state has set up a rural craft hub and community museum in the village. Buyers can take home cast figurines and ornaments, often sourced through the artisans' co-operative.
Typical price: ₹500-15000
Buying tip: Visit the rural craft hub and community museum at Dariyapur, a short drive from Guskara. Ask whether a piece is from the GI-registered artisans' co-operative and check the casting quality — clean wire mesh and a smooth bronze finish.
