Purba Bardhaman, West Bengal
Mihidana
A delicate GI-tagged Bengali sweet of Bardhaman, made from fine roasted rice powder (chira) and saffron, light with a melt-in-the-mouth texture. It is one of the two signature sweets of Burdwan, alongside sitabhog, with a history that runs through the Bardhaman court. The Bardhaman Mihidana Sitabhog Welfare Association produces the GI-tagged sweets, and the first GI-tagged mihidanas were even shipped from Burdwan to Bahrain. It is a must-buy at the sweet shops of Bardhaman city.
Typical price: ₹100-500
Buying tip: Buy fresh from established sweet shops in Bardhaman city (the Sarbamangala Road and Bowbazar market areas). Look for GI-tagged packing if you want certified provenance; it travels well packed in small boxes.
