Sundarban Honey (Sundarban Mouban Honey)
Raw, unprocessed honey harvested once a year (roughly April-June) by tribal honey hunters called moules from wild beehives in the mangrove canopy of the world's largest mangrove forest. Collectors work under forest-department permits and the honey is dark amber, thick, and earthy-caramel in flavour. It earned a GI tag (registered via IP India, with West Bengal's WBFDCL marketing it as 'Sundarban Raw Honey'), making it one of the few GI-tagged foods of the district. Buyers get small 250g-1kg jars of pure forest honey sold by collector cooperatives in the Sundarbans blocks and by GI-certified online brands.
Typical price: ₹165-1500 (300g jar to 1kg GI-certified jar)
Buying tip: Look for GI-certified or WBFDCL/collector co-op brands and expect a thick, unprocessed honey that can crystallise naturally; prices rise sharply for premium GI-marked jars.
