Bengal Dokra (Bikna Lost-Wax Metalwork)

Dokra is a lost-wax (cire perdue) metal craft in which twisted and fused metal wire or thin sheets are built up into figurines of horses, elephants, humans and ritual objects, then cast in brass, bronze or copper alloys. It is practised in Bankura district at Bikna village by Damar (Dokra) artisan families, and West Bengal's Dokra craft received a GI tag in 2018 ('Bengal Dokra') with authorised users including Bikna. Wall hangings, sculptures and figurines are sold as decorative and ritual pieces. It is one of the oldest surviving metal-craft traditions in the country and a genuine local speciality.
