Bishnupur Motichur Laddu

GI Tagged Food Confidence: high

A melt-in-the-mouth laddu made from mihidana (gram-flour) pearls deep-fried in pure ghee, hand-rolled into balls and lightly soaked in sugar syrup. Local tradition holds that the Malla Rajas of Bishnupur had it specially created for their family deities Radha and Govinda, which gives it a royal-heritage story. Bishnupur's motichur laddu was awarded a GI tag on 31 March 2025, joining Bishnupur's other GI-recognised products. It is the standard festive sweet to taste and pack for home in the terracotta-temple town.

Typical price: ₹200-800

Buying tip: Buy from Bishnupur sweet shops or GI-tagged sellers so the laddu is genuinely made in the town; expect small pearl-sized boondi and a ghee-forward taste rather than heavy sugar.
