Panchmura Terracotta Jewellery

Lightweight earrings, pendants, beads and necklace sets made from fired, painted terracotta clay, an extension of the GI-registered Panchmura terracotta craft. The same Kumbhakar potters who make the famous horse also mould these small clay ornaments, which are painted in bright colours and sold as eco-friendly souvenirs. The Bankura government's own tourism guidance points visitors to Panchmura for live demonstrations and terracotta souvenirs or jewellery. It is a cheap, authentic, locally made gift that is hard to find outside the district.

Buying tip: Pick pieces with even paint and no chips on the fired clay; sets of earrings and pendants are the best value. Ask for the GI 'Bankura Panchmura Terracotta Craft' label when buying online.
