Babui Rope Work
Handicraft
Confidence: medium
Babui (a coarse grass) rope is a traditional livelihood craft of Jhargram: several handicraft items in the district's craft areas are made from Babui rope, and rope making with Babui grass is the only source of livelihood for the poor artisans who practice it. The finished ropes and rope-based items are tough, natural-fibre goods suited to rural and forest use. It is a niche, low-cost craft item that captures the grassland economy of the Jangal Mahal region.
Typical price: ₹50-400
Buying tip: Ask the seller about twist count and rope diameter before buying; pliable, evenly twisted rope signals a good artisan and lasts longer in daily use.
