Malda Bamboo and Cane Handicrafts
Bamboo and cane weaving is an old indigenous craft of Malda, practised by artisan families around Majlishbag (Majlis Bagh) in Old Malda and in the Bamongola, Gazole and Habibpur blocks. A registered producer company, Majlishbag Malda Bamboo Handicrafts Producer Company Limited, markets the weavers' eco-friendly baskets, trays and decorative pieces to buyers in the city and beyond. The craft survives on generational skill and is a signature handmade purchase from the district. Buyers get lightweight, fully handwoven items made from locally sourced bamboo and cane.
Typical price: ₹150-5000
Buying tip: Buy directly from the Majlishbag producer company or the artisan clusters, and check that the weave is tight and the edges are smooth and splinter-free. Larger pieces are sturdy and ship well as gifts.
