Malda, West Bengal
Malda Nistari Silk Yarn
Malda Nistari silk yarn is the traditional mulberry silk reeled by sericulture farmers, and silk is produced in all community development blocks of Malda district. The district hosts cocoon and raw-silk testing facilities, and a new Silk Park at the Madhughat area of English Bazar is reviving the industry, which had been on the edge of extinction. Home-based weavers and reela produce yarn and silk fabric that traders sell locally and to weaving hubs. Buyers get hand-reeled Nistari yarn — finer and cheaper than Banarasi silk — suitable for weaving and gifting.
Typical price: ₹500-5000 per kg
Buying tip: Buy yarn at the Silk Park shops in English Bazar (Madhughat) or directly from home reela producers, and ask for the cocoon/raw-silk test certificate for purity. Nistari yarn is a good value for weaving projects because it is finer and cheaper than Banarasi silk.
