Nadia, West Bengal
Betel Leaf (Pana Patta)
Fresh betel-vine leaf, a major homestead and orchard crop of Nadia district, grown especially in the Karimpur I and Karimpur II, Krishnaganj (Krishnanagar) and Chakdaha blocks, where research studies identify it as a major livelihood crop for local farmers. The district's betel growers supply the leaf used in paan and in Bengali and regional food traditions, and it is traded through local marketing channels studied for pricing and buyer-monopoly issues. Buyers get fresh, large, glossy leaves from one of West Bengal's active betel-leaf belts.
Typical price: ₹50-300
Buying tip: Buy by the bunch from local markets in the Karimpur/Chakdaha belt or town haats; pick leaves that are large, glossy and unbruised, since price and quality vary with market conditions.
