Tangail Saree
A traditional handwoven Bengali saree whose name comes from the Tangail weaving tradition; the GI registration (2024) covers Tangail sarees of Nadia and Purba Bardhaman, woven by the Basak weaver community around Santipur (Shantipur) in Nadia and Kalna in Bardhaman. The cloth is a fine handloom taant with characteristic spaced motifs, softer in feel than Dhakai jamdani. Buyers get a GI-protected, handwoven heritage saree that is now in demand nationally and abroad.
Typical price: ₹1000-15000
Buying tip: Buy from weaver-run shops or looms in Santipur and Fulia, where Phulia Tangail saris are made; check that the fabric is handwoven (slightly irregular, soft drape) rather than power-loom with printed Tangail-style borders, which cannot legally carry the GI name.
